| On Monday 7 July, the Secretary of State announced 2026 as The National Year of Reading, a nationwide campaign which aims to reverse the decline in reading for pleasure among children, young people and adults. |
|
The National Year of Reading is a DfE initiative, in partnership with The National Literacy Trust (NLT). This summer, the NLT will distribute over 72,000 new books to children in areas with high poverty rates to support positive reading habits at home. Join us for our free CPD supporting building reading for pleasure in our schools
This group provides free evidence–based CPD for teachers, teaching assistants, early years professionals, librarians, reading volunteers and others to enrich their understanding of reading for pleasure (RfP) and how to support it. This is working on focusing on the impact with a small group of children.
Targeting the whole school One afternoon session per half-term face to face in Bovey Tracey - delegates must attend all the face-to-face sessions. Attend all sessions and receive £150 worth of reading for pleasure books. The TSRC programme is underpinned by research; throughout the programme there are articles/books for participants to read as well as references to research built into the session plans. This research is split into two strands: reading for pleasure and leadership development/change management theory. There will be gap tasks in between the sessions, and you will receive a certificate once the course is completed. For more information and to sign up: https://forms.office.com/e/xdde6mzAiw These sessions are still open to sign up and attend for the rest of this academic year. |

We are pleased to announce that Danni Cooke our Ilsham National English Hub Lead has been successfully appointed as a member of the National English Hub Council for the next three academic years.
The National Council comprises eight members including a chair. Members are appointed by the Department for Education with the purpose of offering expert advice to DfE to assist in informing the strategic direction of the English Hubs, including reach, target audience, support model, and future development to ensure change and to drive improvement in the teaching of reading, with a focus on systematic synthetics phonics, early language development and reading for pleasure. The Hubs Council members also support and advise the DfE as appropriate on wider English Curriculum policy development.

Danni Cooke explains how the Learning Academy Partnership utilises technology to enable pupils from various schools across the trust to engage in story time together.

Ilsham C of E Academy Year 4 teacher Fiona Blake talks us through the school's use of a book club to develop pupils' enthusiasm in reading for pleasure
